A National Movement
Miracle Network Dance Marathon is a movement uniting college, university, and high school students across North America. In 1991, students at Indiana University founded Dance Marathon in the memory of Ryan White, a fellow student who passed away from HIV/AIDS. Today, on more than 300 campuses nationwide, thousands of students come together every year to make miracles happen for local kids. Each organization is entirely student-run. Involvement in a campus' dance marathon organization means spending a year gaining leadership, teamwork, and nonprofit business experience while raising funds and awareness for their local Children's Miracle Network Hospital.
The year culminates with an 8-40 hour event (the dance marathon) on each campus where students get to meet patient families treated at their local hospital, participate in games and dancing, enjoy entertainment, and reveal their annual fundraising total. Last year alone, Miracle Network Dance Marathons raised more than $26 million.
A Campus Tradition
Here at UNC Charlotte, Dance Marathon (DM) has taken on a new life as one of the university's youngest and fastest growing student-led philanthropic efforts. Charlotte DM was created in the Spring of 2013 under the name of 49er Dance Mine. In the Spring of 2013, the inaugural class of Levine Scholars established DM on the UNC Charlotte campus as the first legacy project of the Levine Scholars Program. The leadership and initiative of these students led the organization to raise over $35,000 in just three months, and brought the cause to greater recognition across the student body and in the Charlotte community.
Encouraged by the success, the DM leadership team set out to increase participation and raise excitement for the 2014 event. With great satisfaction, Charlotte Dance Marathon achieved its goal of raising $49,000 in its second year!
One of the goals leading into 2015 was to bring the total raised for Levine Children's Hospital to over $130,000 in our time here on campus. After months of hard-work, dedication, and support from both the student body and Charlotte communities, we were able to accomplish this goal.
2016 brought continued excitement and expansion. For the first time in program history, Charlotte DM raised over $50,000 - an incredible feat, especially considering the amount of obstacles the leadership team faced during their tenure.
With the work for Charlotte Dance Marathon 2018 already begun, the leadership team hopes to further build our presence on campus and throughout the community. As we raise funds throughout the year, we hope that you will join us in our efforts to continue to grow, inspire, and unite Niner Nation and the Queen City "For The Kids" at Levine Children's Hospital!
